The following charts show population distribution in terms of three different age groups in three different countries in Africa. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The three bar charts show the breakdown of population into three categories for Niger, Libya and Nigeria for 1950 and 2000, with a projection for 2050. In 1950, all three countries had fewest people in the over 60’s age range at 1%, 8% and 5% respectively. The 15-59 age group stood at 53% for both Libya and Nigeria, while Niger was slightly behind at 49%. In 2000, the biggest group in all three countries was for those aged between 15 and 59, while the smallest remained those over 60. The youngest sector remained highest in Niger. By 2050, it is projected that the number of over 60’s will grow in all three places, making up a quarter of the population in Libya. The largest category everywhere is still likely to be the 15-59 age range, while the number of young people under 14 is expected to fall across the board. Overall, the greatest changes in distribution will be in Libya, with the percentage of young people falling by more than half from 39% in 1950 to 17% by 2050, and while those in the mid-range show little significant change, the proportion of elderly people will increase.
