Modern lifestyles have made it harder for people to live a healthy and active lifestyle. What are the causes of this situation? Suggest what can be done by the government and large organisations to improve it.
Nowadays life is hectic and it is becoming more and more difficult to stay fit and healthy. However, I think there are measures which large corporations and the state can take to alleviate the situation.
Today, people frequently work long hours to stay ahead in a competitive world. They have little time to exercise, and rush from one place to another in cars or by public transport. Some may want to walk or cycle to work, but their employers may have no facilities where they can shower and change clothes. They may live in an urban area with few sports facilities, or in more expensive suburbs where the cost of joining a gym or health spa is prohibitive. During the day, many skip breakfast because they have no time, eat junk food at lunchtime because their breaks are short, and opt for takeaways or pre-prepared food in the evening because they are too tired to cook. Even those who do, sometimes find that healthier food choices, such as organic vegetables, are too expensive, especially if they have a family. All this leads to stress and anxiety, including sleep disorders, affecting people’s ability to stay healthy.
Yet there are steps which large organisations and governments can take to improve the health of their employees or citizens. Companies could provide facilities for staff who want to jog or bike into the office. They could provide leisure centres with free membership and offer healthy food in their canteens. They might offer flexible work rotas to permit adequate time for breaks and exercise and run inter-office sports events or host lectures on health and diet. In order to facilitate this, governments could offer tax breaks or subsidies for ‘healthy’ companies. They could ensure local authorities open municipal sports facilities and parks when town-planning, and provide subsidised shops for low-income families offering healthy foodstuffs. In addition, they could legislate to ensure workers have sufficient rest periods. Even more importantly, they could insist on education in schools so that a healthy and active lifestyle is ingrained at an early age.
In conclusion, while there are a number of reasons why it is difficult for individuals to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle, there are measures which large organisations and governments can take to minimise the risks of an increasingly unhealthy population.
