MODEL ESSAY: Coffee The three pie charts show how much coffee is produced in 60 kg bags in three categories in three different countries. The two bar charts show coffee consumption in total and per head of population. The biggest producer overall is Vietnam, with a little over 25 million bags, whereas the smallest is Costa Rica with 1.26 million. While the majority of Vietnam’s output is roasted beans, Costa Rica’s output is green Arabica. India is the only country to produce green Robusta which amounts to almost half of its coffee output at 2.32 million bags, followed by roasted coffee and slightly less Arabica than Costa Rica at 1.01 million bags. When it comes to consumption, both Vietnam and India use 2 million bags compared to Costa Rica’s 0.3 million, but for India, this represents over a third of its production. In terms of the amount of coffee consumed per head, the greatest consumers are Costa Ricans, at 2.7 kg each, while in Vietnam it is less than half that at 1.3 kg, and India’s consumption is a mere 100 grams per person. Overall, the smallest producer is the largest consumer of coffee per head of population.
