In the last few decades developments in information technology such as email, the Internet and smartphones have brought significant benefits. However, in future, such developments are likely to have an increasingly negative effect. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Thanks to teacher Marco for this essay:
Most people consider developments in IT such as email, the Internet and smartphones beneficial, but some fear future developments will have more and more of a negative impact. While all technology has its drawbacks and some native effects may get worse, I believe that there will also be positive developments and that most difficulties can be overcome.
There have undoubtedly been benefits to IT developments in recent years. With emails, people can do business on the far side of the world in a matter of minutes, sending large documents, audio files or images as attachments. The Internet has made distance learning affordable and legitimate, making it possible for people even in remote places to benefit. Smartphones mean families can keep in touch at any time, providing security for women working late and for mothers worried about their children. However, the negative effects of technology cannot be ignored. Constantly writing emails and texts leads to poor language skills. Always turning to the Internet for entertainment and information means people are losing social skills and the ability to communicate face to face. Smartphones have become a dangerous nuisance, disturbing people in restaurants and causing accidents on the roads and even on the streets as people walk looking at their phones and not where they are going.
Some of these negative effects are likely to get worse. As instant communication becomes the norm, people will have less time for reflection and considered replies to questions. As the Internet continues to grow it becomes harder to regulate and an even greater vehicle for criminal activity such as pornography and identity theft. As smartphones become even more common, accidents, damage from radiation, and nomophobia (fear of having no access to a phone) will increase. However, not all developments are likely to be negative, and those that are can be overcome. For example, in future, being able to write fully and correctly may become a kind of status symbol, with people signing up to take courses on how to write properly rather than in the manner of emails and texts. The very hackers who abuse the Internet may be recruited to write programmes to protect computers systems from viruses and help regulate the web to protect vulnerable members of society. In addition, as technology improves, the harmful effects of using smartphones will be eliminated and apps will be available to help people navigate busy streets safely.
All in all, any progress has positives and negatives, and I believe developments in information technology in the future will, overall, be beneficial.
