I see upward and upwards but is the 's' correct? Others are similar - like downward/inward? Bjorn

Historically, upward is used as an adjective and upwards as an adverb: There is an upward trend in sales. = an adjective describing 'trend' The trend in sales is upwards. = an adverb describing 'is'. Nowadays, upward and upwards are both used as adverbs, but Am.Eng favours 'upward' and Br.Eng prefers 'upwards'. When used before 'trend' in a Task 1 essay, however, only 'upward' is possible, because it is an adjective!
