Hello,
I would love to get some comment on what I wrote. The task was:
Write about the following topic: Some people consider computers to be more of a hindrance than a help. Others believe that they have greatly increased human potential.
How could computers be considered a hindrance?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience. Write at least 250 words.
This is what I wrote. I will need an 8, does anybody have an idea if I come close to that band?
Computers are a big part of everybody´s life these days. If you like it or not, the machines are everywhere but to some people they are an annoyance rather than a help.
It is to complicated. It does not do what I want it to. We have all heard people say that about computers. In this case it was my father who uttered those words. To him it is a daunting idea to step into the digital world. The first time he turned on his newly bought desktop computer he saw a screen he did not understand. He read the manual and it contained words he had never read before. To him words like hard-drive and USB-key sound like Chinese. That gave him a nervous feeling and straight away my dad decided that the technological highway wasn't for him. Because of that decision he finds it hard to find a new job. He became unemployed last year but all the job vacancies he applies for require at least a basic knowledge of computers.
Getting onto a train in the Netherlands also demands a basic knowledge of computers. All the counters that sell tickets at the station have dissapeared and have been replaced by machines. That is the main reason my grandmother will not take the train anymore. My grandmother is an intelligent, sophisticated, ninety year old lady who grew up before the technological era. She never felt the need to learn about computers. Now the world has changed so quickly over the last decade she thouroughly regrets that decision. At this advanced age though she noticed her brain can not handle studying anymore. It is sad because it puts her in social isolation and makes her world smaller.
To conclude this I think it is important that we realise how much computers have become embedded into our lives. Some people find it hard to cope with that and to them this computerised society may have negative consequences.
