Crime is a common topic in IELTS so we've been working on crime essays. We looked at some of the vocabulary and came up with a list. It's important to know other ways to express the same idea so you can paraphrase questions, and so that your writing is more interesting.
Crime = offence, felony, misdemeanour, wrongdoing, law-breaking
accuse sb (of a crime) = charge, blame, indict
acquit = clear, exonerate, set free, release
arrest = take into custody, seize, detain, apprehend
barrister = brief, legal representative (in court)
capital punishment = the death penalty
charge = formally accuse somebody of a crime
commit (a crime) = perpetrate
community service = work without payment rather instead of going to prison
condemned = prisoner found guilty and sentenced to death
convict = criminal, crook, villain, prisoner
convicted = found guilty, sentenced, sent down
court = tribunal , legal premises
criminal (n) = offender, convict, prisoner
criminal (adj) = Illegal, against the law, illicit, unlawful
death sentence = death penalty
defend = represent, argue on behalf of
deterrent = disincentive, threat
evidence = Proof, verification, substantiation
fine = penalty, charge, fee for wrongdoing

innocent = blameless, guiltless, not guilty

recidivist = A repeat offender who doesn’t learn from prison
reform = improve, get better
rehabilitation = Learn to integrate back into society as a law abiding citizen

repeat offender = recidivist
restitution = make good
retribution = revenge
sentence = verdict, judgement, punishment
solicitor = legal representative who instructs a barrister
suspended sentence = sentence not imposed unless the offender commits another crime
testimony = evidence, affidavit, statement - given by a witness about a crime
the accused = person charged with a crime
vandal / vandalism = someone who damages property / the damage
verdict = result of a court case, answer, sentence
victim = person who suffered from a crime, injured party, prey
witness = someone who saw a crime, observer, someone who gives testimony
young offender = criminal too young to be prosecuted in court
young offender institution = a boot camp, borstal or reform centre for young offenders.
There are also words for types of crime, such as a theft or robbery, a burglary, murder (homicide), fraud, extortion and so on.
Here are the less common ones:
