Differences between countries become less evident each year. Nowadays, all over the world people share the same fashions, advertising, brands, eating habits and TV channels. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of this?

People often refer to the world being a global village today, since people from every corner of the globe have access to the same food, commercials, TV and clothing. While there are some minor disadvantages to globalisation, I think the advantages far exceed them.
To start with, the downside to globalisation is cultural change, because there is a risk that some cultures may be damaged by exposure to, say, American movies or the English language. People may adopt clothes inappropriate to their own culture, or abandon their native tongue to speak the lingua franca of the world: English. However, even these disadvantages can be minimised, and while cultures may change or develop through globalisation, it is part of a natural process whereby a people adopts the best parts of something new and leaves the parts which are not helpful or appropriate.
The advantages, on the other hand, are many. One is having access to technology on the far side of the world from the country that developed it. For example, breakthrough surgical techniques in Columbia are being used in laser eye treatments in India. Another is the opportunities for work and study that now exist around the world. People are no longer restricted to doing what their fathers and grandfathers did: they can do anything and go anywhere. A third benefit is the sharing of ideas. Understanding other people and cultures makes everyone more tolerant and reduces prejudices and reliance on stereotypes. Finally, globalisation can help to make everyone part of an international community so that countries feel less disadvantages. For example, everyone can buy an i-phone whether they are in Japan or Jamaica.
Overall, while some people see globalisation as a threat to local cultures and traditions, I think it is represents progress and development and can help the world work together for everyone’s betterment.
