Hello,
Speaking: I want some ideas on the following questions
Cue Card Describe a country that you have never been to and would like to visit. Please say - What and where is it? - What will you do there? - Why do you wish to go there?
Discussion - Do you think you will visit this country in the near future? - Do you think people should travel abroad? Why? - How does tourism affect your country? Why? - What is the difference between traveling and living or studying in another country? - What is the difference between travel in the past and today?

For a question like this, you need to know something about another country. If you're taking IELTS to study or work in another country, then you'll already know something about the new place. You don't need to answer all the bullet points on a cue card, but they can help you think of ideas. You could start of describing the country - where it is, what it's like, what it's famous for, the climate and so on, and answer the 'what will you do there' and 'why do you wish to go there' by explaining you want to work or study there. Even if you are thinking of permanently immigrating, then you could still say you want to check it out prior to making a permanent move. Alternatively, you may be keen on a particular country because you have seen a documentary about it, or know of someone famous from there, or because it has historical significance, so you could talk about that, and imagine going there as a tourist. For 1, it would be an 'It depends' question. You may want to visit but don't have time, so you would need to wait for college holidays or ask for time off work. You may want to go, but you haven't the money, so you need to save up or borrow some money. You may want to go, but have responsibilities - such as family - at home, so you would need to make arrangements to cover them. You could talk about all or some of these. For 2, this would be your opinion. You could relate it to cultural awareness - the need to travel to other places and learn about other cultures in order to foster communications and good relations. For 3, this is directly connected to your country - where do people go in your country? What do they go there for? Does it create jobs? Do tourists damage the environment? Have some places changed because of tourism (e.g. Kerala, Goa)? Are different goods available now to cater for tourists? Are there courses in colleges for tourism that didn't exist before tourism? For 4, this is the difference between being a tourist and being a resident. You have more responsibilities as a resident, because you have to try to fit in, follow rules and so on. Maybe you have to have a local driving licence when you work or study somewhere, but you don't need one as a tourist as your home licence will do. You may not need to speak the language if you're a tourist, but it may be necessary to learn if you are resident there. It would affect all kinds of things like banking (you'd have to open a local account), health insurance, tax and so on. It would also make a difference to how well you got to know a country - as a tourist you get to see a very tiny portion of a 'santised' version of the place. As a resident, you often get to see everything - warts and all. For 5, the differences are huge - mostly the form of travel (planes, trains, ships) compared to foot/horse/camel/boat, the time spent and the cost of travel. In the past very few people could afford to travel and it cost a huge proportion of their annual income, and it may have taken months to reach a destination. Now, more people can travel because the relative cost has come down, and it's much faster. The range of places you can reach has increased, because there are very few really remote places these days. You can expand on these ideas and try to relate them to your own experiences/culture. www.ieltsexchange.com
