I read your student answers on www.ieltsexchange.com/#!part-2/cn1m and they are great, but some of them seem to go a bit off topic. Would they be penalised for that?

Hi Teacher Nese All of the cue-card answers tell a story. The students directly covered the topics on the cue card, but the additional details they added allowed them to sound more natural and show off their English. The details and examples also allow them to adapt their answers to other cue cards. Examiners are happy for students to add extra information related to the topic, providing they have answered the question(s) on the cue-card and are within the 2 minute time limit. Teacher Dennis

We have spoken to IELTS about being 'off topic' in Part 2 of the speaking test. Their standing instructions are that the answer must be related to the topic (so if you are asked about your home-town, you don't speak about your best friend) and NOT memorised - otherwise there is no such thing as 'off-topic'. Kind regards Teacher Jill
