The pie chart shows the number of hours dedicated to household chores by men and women in full time work. The table lists various tasks and actual time spent by husbands and wives, together with their estimates of time spent.
The greatest proportion of time, at 26.1 hours, was by wives, while husbands spent just 12.8 hours on housework.
In terms of tasks, wives spent most time cooking, at 6.3 hours per week, and least time on family paperwork at 2.2, while husbands spent most time (2.8 hours) on home maintenance and least on laundry at 1.1 hours per week. Across all seven tasks, both groups under-estimated the number of hours wives spent on housework, with the exception of shopping for the household, which men suggested took 4 hours, women 3.4 hours and actually took 3.1 hours. Husbands thought the amount of time they spent on all chores was higher than it was, while wives over-estimated the time husbands spent on washing dishes, cleaning, paperwork and home maintenance, and under-estimated that spent on laundry and shopping.
Overall, wives’ estimates of time spent (25.1 hours) were close to their actual figure of 26.1 hours, while husbands’ (17.7) were in excess of the 12.8 actual hours spent.
