Academic Results 2014 by First Language. We know writing is the most difficult skill to master in IELTS. The following table shows the % drop in writing skills compared to the overall band score for each of the top 40 native or first languages spoken by IELTS candidates last year. One would expect that candidates with languages which use a non-Latin alphabet, such as Uzbek or Arabic, would have the most difficulty with writing and show the greatest difference between writing score and overall score. However, it seems that the difficulty with writing is just as common for those using the Latin alphabet (including native English-speakers) as for those that do not.

Well done all native-German-speaking IELTS candidates - your average band score for writing was better that that for native-English-speaking candidates! I think English students are getting lazy! Nikki
