For task 2, it is important that the examiner knows what you think from the start, and that you support your views throughout the essay and give a clear conclusion at the end. It does not matter how the question is written - it may not directly ask for your opinion at all - but you must give one!
Look at the band descriptors:
Band score 2: does not express a position The examiner has no idea what your opinion is. Band score 3: does not express a clear position The examiner doesn’t really know what your opinion is. Band score 4: presents a position but this is unclear The examiner isn’t sure what your opinion is. Band score 5: expresses a position but the development is not always clear and there may be no conclusions drawn The examiner knows what you think, but you haven’t explained why. Band score 6: presents a relevant position although the conclusions may become unclear or repetitive The examiner knows what you think, but you haven’t summed up your views or you repeat things Band score 7: presents a clear position throughout the response The examiner knows what you think from start to finish.
If you are aiming at band score 7 or higher, you MUST say what you think from the beginning, support your viewpoint throughout the essay and draw logical conclusions which you state at the end.
