• Question:
Due to development and rapid expansion os supermarkets in some countries, many small, local business are unable to compete. Some people think that the closure of local business will bring about the death of local communities.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
______________
• ESSAY:
In a globalized world, local communities may be in danger, because bigger companies are replacing local markets and stores even on small cities and towns. There are many advantages that make multinational companies a more interesting option for costumers, therefore, that's the main reason why local business may not survive as they are no longer able to offer the same prices for goodies and services as bigger enterprises, killing local communities.
Firstly, local or family based companies tend to use handmade services which are more expensive and take longer to be completed, while industries can provide everything faster and cheaper. If by on side it may be a positive factor showing development, on the other side, I believe smaller cities where a strong community always existed are no longer sustainable. When "outsider" companies arrive in local communities, they break the bound of locals who are not able to compete with prices and deadlines. Secondly, as this community was based on each one supporting each other internally, when a new business gets into the middle of their society, everything changes.
Finally, if local business can't maintain themselves active and they were the base structure of a local community, they are in danger of being extinguished.
In concluding, local communities depends on small local business to survive, but, unfortunately, they probably don't have a longer future in our globalized society if small cities continue to have a linear growing on the same direction as on previous years.
Thank you very much!
