Perhaps it depends on how one is raised as a child. One might be privileged and yet sense at a young age, a feeling of instability in the air: between one's parents for instance, that one is living in a pleasant house that is founded on sand, a premonition or subconscious anxiety that although one is loved, life is elusive in many ways, One is only allowed treats on special occasions, and there on a plate is an enticing marshmallow. The child has yet to hear of self-discipline but knows already that it is may be a lost opportunity. It could disappear by various means and decides after looking around, to snap it up and polish it off.
Today, a friend and public health wrote: 'Having cheese cake and choccies for breakfast. The pups had pancakes... (of her 3 large rescue dogs)'. A hard worker in the international children's community, always the first to take up a challenge, a dangerous overseas mission without blinking, from a fine working background, who put herself through college and went on to become a fine water engineer deemed "extraordinary" by the US Government. 'Treat yourself well', was my response, 'and send some cheese cake this way. It's raw almonds here and I've eaten them all during our exchange'.
Or, from another highly disciplined friend coming into the City today: 'Let's have lunch because if we keep putting it off'...'Understand. You're right. Meet me when convenient'. We are both more acutely aware of Time and of Lost Opportunities.
