Writing with plural.
At Band 7, IELTS say use a ‘variety of complex structures’. It is hard to choose correct verbs, articles, pronouns and such. One way my students use is writing in the plural when it is possible to do that. It is not always possible because subjects may be singular (it) or uncountable and need singular verbs. But sometimes it is. Here are examples from essays:
Original: Substantial increase in population is also causing problems in developing countries.
Correct: The substantial increase in the population is also causing problems in developing countries.
Plural: Substantial increases in populations are also causing problems in developing countries.
Original: For instance, people in Turkey are facing crisis in energy sector and public transport system due to overpopulation.
Correct: For instance, people in Turkey are facing a crisis in the energy sector and public transport system due to overpopulation.
Plural: For instance, people in Turkey are facing crises in energy sectors and public transport systems due to overpopulation.
Original: Overpopulation causes problem in health, academic and other public services domain and place huge burden on government.
Correct: Overpopulation causes a problem in the health, academic and other public services domain and places a huge burden on the government.
Plural: Overpopulation causes problems in health, academic and other public services domains and places huge burdens on governments.
It may stop mistakes if you try.
